Golden Lion Grrrages

Time to polish the air cleaner housings. This is the "before" picture.
I've read that the air housings on the J should be red. I've seen so many J housings that are chrome I have to wonder if chrome was optional, maybe from the dealer?
This is the "after" picture.
The base is red. The previous owner left the air filter decal Fram CA189PL on the filter. One way to remember the part number I guess.
A close look shows gold paint under the red paint. F, G, ram H and J used the same air cleaner housing. F, G, ram H housings are gold. Maybe the factory added a coat of red to gold housings in stock to use on the J.
You can read more about ram housings here.
How about some TLC to the sill plates?
This picture shows one sill plate completed and the other before buffing.
These are original plates, delightfully free from corrosion.
I used a hand drill for the buff and Eastwood 3071 stainless compound.
For years I've heard new sill plates will be available but it hasn't happened. The same sill plate was used from 1960 to 1964 and has never been re-popped. Whoever brings new plates to market should sell a ton of them.
The alternator.
The alternator after some attention.
One of the short rams "before".
After wire brush.
After paint with Bill Hirsch turquoise.
Stuff going back together.
There is a high capacity 180 thermostat under the gooseneck.
I always wondered why the push button on the driver door handle wobbled. I took the handle off the door, compared with a NOS and found the aligning plate missing. Easy fix, install the NOS handle.
New wiring harness installed in the engine bay, headlight test.
Look at these two water temperature senders. That is a 1963 on the left, a 1964 on the right. Not only are the diameters different, the wire connection changed.
Since I have a 1964 engine in here with its 1964 water pump housing, I either have to modify the new wires (no) or swap in a 1963 housing.
Or, as Carl Bilter says, use a temp sender for a 64 with AC.
Carl was right. Here is a 63 sender, a 64 w.o AC, and a 64 with AC. Problem solved for less than $7.
The other short ram completed.
Heater box installed. This one cleaned up better than any before. Nice natural color.
The heater switch had to come out and swapped for a better one.
The job finished, and the fan has a high and low speed as it should.
